Count Muffat must accompany an English prince to the theater and while there can hardly constrain himself because Nana has aroused in him unknown desires. Zola uses the theme of cross dressing throughout his novel. He uses it as a means to advance the idea that sex and gender distinction is only a perceived human thought. When Georges visits Nana in her house out in the country, he is soaked to the bone due to rain.

Given the high degree of sexual innuendo in the novel, I think the more recent translation is better, even though it feels a little harsher and less clear at times; but it is probably higher fidelity to the French (of which I can't compare).

Nana, daughter of a drunk and a laundress, is the Helen of Troy of Paris. A sexually magnetic high-class prostitute and actress, she becomes a celebrity, rapidly conquering society, ruining all men who fall under her spell -- especially Count Muffat, Chamberlain to the Empress. Nana comes from the streets, a runaway from a dysfunctional family. She becomes an overnight celebrity when she appears nude in a theatrical production while still a teenager.

Parmee is clearly the winner, saying much more and with passion, it's a lot clearer what Nana was doing.
